Elements & Principles
Students will begin taking photos, but they will focus on a different element or principle each day. Camera settings will be general, so that they can learn proper practices. There is no specific order, one photo per each listed element and principle. Do not use filters, only the raw photo. We will learn how to crop, rotate, and place images in the diagram below. There will be tutorials in TEAMS, but we will go over step by step directions in class.
Save the blank diagrams below
Elements of Art: form, texture, value, shape, color, space, line
form - three-dimensional and encloses volume
texture - refers to the way things feel, or look as if they might feel if touched
value - lightness or darkness of tones or colors
shape - two-dimensional, flat, or limited to height and width
color - three properties: hue, value, and intensity. • Hue: name of color • Value: hue’s lightness and darkness (a color’s value changes when white or black is added) • Intensity: quality of brightness and purity (high intensity= color is strong and bright; low intensity= color is faint and dull)
space - sense of depth
line - point moving in space
Principles of Design: pattern, balance, unity, movement, emphasis, contrast
pattern - repeating of an object or symbol
balance - distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space
unity - feeling of harmony between all parts of the work
movement - path the viewer’s eye takes through the work of art,
emphasis - part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention
contrast - arrangement of opposite elements (light vs. dark colors, rough vs. smooth textures, large vs. small shapes, etc.) in a piece so as to create visual interest, excitement, and drama
